Future Project: RiseMalawi Vocational Training School
The proposed project is designed with the purpose of supplementing the technical and vocational education and training provided by the Malawi government and other non-governmental organizations, which is offered in the few technical colleges in the country. The program will particularly focus on training young people who drop out of high school in local communities. The young people will be trained in different skills and trades (i.e. carpentry, welding, plumbing etc.) together with some entrepreneurial and life skills. The proposed project will provide skills necessary for employment and even opening their own trades in different locations in Malawi. This is in line with vocational education initially started doing as in the developed world like the USA. The main goal of the project is to empower young people (between 15-35yrs) within our catchment area with economic independence through giving them employable trades that will also contribute to the reduction of HIV infections and early marriages among them. Through the project, we will build a learning center at our property and buy equipment for training youth in different trades like carpentry, plumbing, and welding.
Below are outlined objectives mapped out to achieve this goal:
- To train 30 out of school youth every year in vocational skills training and entrepreneurship
- Construction of a skills training center and buy equipment for the training
- To disseminate early pregnancy and HIV infections prevention messages to 30 youth every year of the project.
- To promote economic independence in the lives of 30 young people attending vocational skill training every year
Our vocational skills training targets the youth from over 100 villages with a population of over 20,000 people. The new project will help the organization to reach out to the needs of out-of-school youth from these 100 villages. The project will particularly concentrate and focus on out-of high school youth—those who have dropped out of high school and those who have graduated but are not able to find employment because they lack practical training and experience and cannot be accepted at any college in Malawi. The young men and women will be trained in the following areas:
- carpentry and joinery skills (the main component of the project)
- welding skill
- plumbing skills
- entrepreneurial and business skills
- HIV/AIDS education
It is believed that adolescents and young adults are the ideal and perfect age group to gain fundamental knowledge about vocation and entrepreneurship, and to cultivate a positive approach towards vocation and entrepreneurship. The project will target both male and female youth between 15 to 35 years of age.
