High School Education in Malawi is not free, unlike Elementary (Primary) Education which students learn for free. As such, many learners from poor homes dropout because they lack school fees. It shows that only 30% of learners who complete 8th grade manage to get into high school. Due to economic problems, not all who complete 8th Grade move into high school. Statistics indicate that high school enrollment in Malawi is only at 15% which is well below the Sub-Saharan Africa average of 35%. In rural Malawi less than 5% of girls would complete lower secondary school education. It is against this backdrop that RiseMalawi started the High School Project. RiseMalawi reaches out to 350 High School students providing bursaries, career coaching and health education related support through a participatory approach. We are building our school on about 15 acres’ piece of land few hours from the capital city. We currently have 170 students on the boarding school and around 200 students coming from their homes.
